What is Active Release Techniques® (ART®)?

In addition to providing chiropractic care at our clinic, Dr. Allensen is also an accredited Active Release Techniques® provider (ART®). Active Release Techniques® is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system developed by a Colorado chiropractor Dr. P. Michael Leahy, which treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Dr. Leahy used his technique to treat soft tissue related problems that were not responding to other treatment methods.

The goal of Active Release Techniques® is to restore the normal motion, texture and function to soft tissue structures such as muscles, nerves and blood vessels. As a result of injury, repetitive motion or constant pressure, these structures can develop scar tissue, which may generate pain and affect function.

Some of the conditions effectively treated by ART® include headache, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee pain and tennis elbow. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they often result from injury to overused muscles.

What is an Active Release Techniques® (ART®) treatment like?

Every Active Release Techniques® session is a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. By combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements, abnormal tissues can be treated. Many individuals—from professional athletes to general labourers—are currently being treated with Active Release Techniques® for their various soft tissue ailments.
