Acupuncture

Get the energy flowing through your body to promote healing and improve your overall health.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture in Western Medicine originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM for short). Acupuncture practices in Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine are similar and work to alleviate pain and inflammation in the body, however, the ideas behind them, differ. Traditional Acupuncture practices start with a firm belief that energy (aka Qi) flows throughout the body’s pathways (aka Meridians). There is a web system of meridians, each with its own set of energy functions and organ functions. Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncturists will stimulate the flow of energy through these meridians to allow energy to reach organs and rebalance the Qi through the body.

Western Medicine has taken the traditional practice of Acupuncture and placed it on nerve healing and biochemical reactions. There are two schools of thought that are popular with Acupuncturists: one being that Acupuncture stimulates nerve pathways to block pain signals, and another being that Acupuncture releases endorphins which are the body’s natural chemicals that alleviate pain. In either school of thought, Acupuncturists works to stimulate the nerves through what is known as Acupuncture Points. There are various Acupuncture points throughout the body, each with a unique set of pain-alleviating outcomes.

    Acupuncture Treatment Plans

The first, and most important myth to bust when it comes to Acupuncture treatments, is that the needles hurt. The LiveWell team wants to ensure you that Acupuncture is a very painless treatment that most people do not find discomfort from, although your sensitivity level will affect your individual perception.

Unlike needles that are used to draw blood, acupuncture needles are solid and quite thin and will not draw out any bodily fluids. Your Kitchener, Baden, or Waterloo acupuncturist will insert the needles into Acupuncture points with a quick “tap” motion. The needles stay quite close to the skin surface in non-fleshy areas and a little deeper in fleshier areas like the buttocks. They will not harm any organs or blood vessels. Your acupuncturist will place in as many needles as necessary that connect to the nerves in the area being treated. The amount of time the acupuncture needles will be left in depends on what your Acupuncturist thinks will be most effective as a means of pain treatment. Each needle is individually packaged and sterilized, and they are disposed of after use.

The method of acupuncture described above is what is known as Manual Acupuncture, however, there are also Electromagnetic Acupuncture treatments. Electromagnetic Acupuncture uses a small electric charge from a machine to stimulate the nerves through the acupuncture needle. The sensation from this can feel like a small vibration through the area of treatment and is effective in treating pain as well. Your acupuncturist will ask if you are comfortable with Electromagnetic Acupuncture treatments prior to starting one. If at any time you are uncomfortable during the process, please let your acupuncturist know and they can either adjust the electromagnetic current or stop the treatment.

If it is your first time getting acupuncture, you maybe a little bit nervous but in general, there is not much to worry about. In fact, many patients feel their pain is alleviated after just a few sessions. You can trust our Kitchener, Baden, and Waterloo teams for the best care in the region. Join the movement and book your initial assessment to improve the overall quality of your life!
