What is Osteopathy?

Kitchener Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a treatment based on the principle of treating the body as a whole. It’s designed to treat musculoskeletal pain, whether muscle, bone, joint or nerve and focuses on treating multiple areas of the body for optimal results rather than a single point. This is also why Osteopathy is regarded as an ideal treatment for general body maintenance as well.

A typical Osteopathy treatment involves soft tissue massage work, joint mobilization to improve movement and muscle energy techniques to stretch tight muscles. And although these exercises are most common, it is not unheard of for an Osteopathic Practitioner to add exercises such as active release, cranial sacral therapy and visceral manipulation, to name a few, to a patient’s Osteopathy treatment program. All techniques, regardless of how different they may be are designed to be relaxing and pain-free, making the treatment as enjoyable for the patient as possible.

Some of the most common conditions Osteopathy is used to treat are:

  • Headaches
  • General body pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Disc issues
  • Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow
  • Hip, thigh and knee problems
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Pinched nerves
  • Posture problems
  • Sports injuries
  • And much more
